How do we treat people, no matter what?
The answer to this question can be found in Jesus’ relationship with Judas, who eventually betrayed him. All along Jesus knew that Judas would betray him. He knew the words he spoke earlier to be true:
The good person out of the good treasure of his heart produces good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure produces evil, for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks. (Luke 6:45 ESV)
Jesus knew that eventually, what was in Judas’ heart would manifest. And yet, Jesus didn’t treat him differently. He chose Judas as one his close twelve. He gave him authority to heal and cast out demons in His name. He shared the secrets of the Kingdom with him. Jesus didn’t hold back anything, even though he knew that “out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.”
What can we learn from Jesus? You see, Jesus never treats people differently. He loves everyone… Everyone! He can’t treat people differently because He is love. And no matter what we do and what’s in our hearts, he extends, invites…He loves. And he so loved the…world… that he gave himself.
We tend to hold people at a distance, especially if we sense there is something off with them. I’m challenged to treat people like Jesus treats them, even if they may betray or slander me. You see, I believe Jesus had hope for Judas, just like he has for us. I want to be like that no matter what the circumstance. Holy Spirit come and empower!
